What Is Ethereum in a Nutshell?

Ethereum is an open-source, decentralized network that launched in 2015 — Ethereum's own history of the network dates the first live release, called Frontier, to 30 July 2015. Think of it as a shared global computer that no single person or company owns — instead, thousands of machines around the world run it together, all at once. Anyone can build applications on top of this network, and no one can shut it down or tamper with its records easily.

Running this "global computer" takes fuel to pay for computation, and that fuel is the network's native currency, called Ether, with the symbol ETH. That's why it's worth separating two terms people often mix up:

  • Ethereum: the platform, or network, itself.
  • Ether (ETH): the digital currency used on that network.

In everyday conversation, people often say "Ethereum" to mean the coin too — that's completely normal — but understanding the distinction helps the full picture click into place.

Smart Contracts: The Heart of Ethereum

What set Ethereum apart from the start is smart contracts. A smart contract is simply a small program that lives on the network and runs itself automatically once certain conditions are met — no human middleman required.

Picture a vending machine: you put in money, pick a product, and it hands over your drink instantly, following a fixed rule that never changes. A smart contract works on the same logic, but applied to money and digital data: "if this happens, then do that." Once it's published on the network, it becomes fully transparent — anyone can review its code — and it's very hard to alter afterward.

This idea opened the door to a whole category of applications called decentralized apps (dApps), including:

  • Decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms for lending and trading.
  • NFT (non-fungible token) marketplaces for digital art and collectibles.
  • Gaming platforms, digital identity, and community management tools.

ERC-20 Tokens: How Thousands of Coins Are Built on Ethereum

One of Ethereum's biggest strengths is that anyone can create their own digital token on top of the network, without having to build an entirely new blockchain from scratch. For these tokens to work smoothly with wallets and platforms, the industry settled on a shared technical standard called ERC-20.

In simple terms, ERC-20 is the "rulebook" that defines how a token behaves: how it's sent and received, and how its balance is tracked. The standard itself, EIP-20, sets out the exact functions every compliant token has to provide, including "transfer" for sending and "balanceOf" for checking what an address holds. Thanks to this shared standard, any wallet that supports ERC-20 can handle thousands of different tokens the exact same way. A large share of the coins you hear about today are, at their core, ERC-20 tokens living on the Ethereum network.

In 2022, Ethereum switched from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake — a way of verifying transactions based on "staking" funds rather than energy-intensive mining. That shift cut the network's energy use dramatically: Ethereum's own account of the Merge records the switch as executed on 15 September 2022, and estimates the resulting drop in the network's energy consumption at 99.95%. It was an important step from both an environmental and a technical standpoint.

That doesn't mean the network is "perfect": transaction fees can spike during busy periods, and the technology keeps evolving through updates aimed at boosting speed and lowering costs.
