ToolsZakat on gold calculator
Jewellery is rarely pure gold, so zakat starts by converting what you own into pure grams: a 21K piece is 21/24 gold. If your pure grams reach the nisab of 85 grams, zakat is 2.5% of the value. Enter your weight, karat and today's gold price.
Zakat due
164.06
Your pure gold reaches the nisab, so 2.5% of its value is due.
Pure gold you own (grams)
87.5
Worth 6,562.5 at your price.
Schools of thought differ — most notably on whether jewellery in regular use is exempt — and the lunar-year condition applies. Treat this as arithmetic and ask a scholar you trust.
How this calculator works
Zakat on gold is owed on the pure metal, not the gross weight. The calculator converts your jewellery or bullion to pure grams (weight × karat ÷ 24), checks the total against the nisab of 85 grams of pure gold, and — if you're at or above it and a lunar year has passed — computes 2.5% of the metal's value at the price you enter.
A worked example
You hold 120 grams of 21K jewellery: 120 × 21/24 = 105 pure grams — above the 85-gram nisab. At $75 per gram, the pure content is worth 105 × $75 = $7,875, and the zakat due is 2.5% — about $197. Held 60 grams of 21K instead (52.5 pure grams), you'd be under the nisab: nothing due.
Common questions
- Is zakat due on jewellery I actually wear?
- This is a genuine point of scholarly difference: the Hanafi position obliges zakat on all gold including worn jewellery; others exempt jewellery in regular personal use within customary amounts. The tool computes the Hanafi-style answer; whether the exemption applies to you is a question for your scholar.
- Do I combine gold with silver, cash and crypto for the nisab?
- Monetary wealth is generally combined: if gold alone is under the nisab but gold plus savings crosses it, zakat is typically due on the total. This tool isolates the gold arithmetic; the crypto-zakat tool handles digital holdings, and your combined position may be zakatable even when each part looks exempt.
- Which day's gold price do I use?
- The prevailing price on the day your lunar year completes — that day's value is what the 2.5% is computed on. Local per-gram prices for your karat are quoted daily in most gold markets; use the pure-gold (24K) price here, since the tool already accounts for karat.
What this tool can't tell you
Arithmetic, not a ruling: the wearing exemption, combining rules, debts that offset the nisab, and the gold-versus-silver threshold all vary by school and circumstance. The tool shows the widely used computation; your local scholar or zakat authority owns the final answer.
