The troy ounce (31.103 g) and the tola (11.664 g) are fixed definitions. Jewellery prices add making charges on top of the metal value — this prices the metal only.
How this calculator works
Precious metals trade in different units by market: troy ounces on global exchanges, grams and kilos in most shops, tolas across South Asia and the Gulf. The trap is that the troy ounce (31.1035 g) is heavier than the everyday avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g) — a 10% gap that lands on whoever confuses them. Enter a weight in any unit; the converter shows it in all of them, from the exact definitions.
A worked example
A dealer quotes gold per troy ounce at $2,400, and a local shop quotes per gram. $2,400 ÷ 31.1035 = $77.16 per gram — not the $84.66 you'd get dividing by the kitchen ounce's 28.35. On a 5-tola purchase (5 × 11.664 = 58.32 g), that 10% confusion would be worth about $437.
Common questions
- Why does the troy ounce even exist?
- It survives from medieval European weight systems — named for the French market town of Troyes — kept by bullion markets long after everything else went metric. Global gold and silver prices are still quoted per troy ounce, so the conversion to grams sits inside every local price you see.
- How much is a tola exactly?
- 11.6638 grams — conventionally rounded to 11.664. It descends from the Vedic measure standardised under British India as exactly 180 grains, and remains the everyday gold unit in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Gulf jewellery trade. Ten tolas are about 3.75 troy ounces.
- A shop's scale shows a different weight than my receipt. Who's wrong?
- Check the unit before the honesty: a receipt in tolas against a scale in grams, or a price per troy ounce against a weight in avoirdupois, produces exactly this confusion. Convert both to grams first — if the numbers still disagree beyond rounding, then it's a scale or a dispute.
What this tool can't tell you
The converter changes units, nothing else — it can't verify a scale's calibration, a stamp's honesty (the fake-gold guide covers home tests), or purity: 10 grams of 18K jewellery contains 7.5 grams of gold, which is the jewellery calculator's department.
